How is that a bad idea?
...
OHHH nevermind, I see. There's a trunk were the wagon part should be. Yeah, that's a bad idea.

Isn't this terribly expensive?
I mean, 4000$ for a slushbox Subaru sedan that's been around the world nearly 10 times?
If you're willing to accept high-mileage cars I'd bet you can find some nice 5-speed WRX's for that kind of money..

NO. Please don't get an auto. My mom has a Legacy L with what I imagine is the same transmission. It's the worst automatic transmission ever designed. I'm not kidding when I say that it shifts up when you're trying to go uphill, and down at the top.
I mean, they're great cars, but the transmission programming is a bit baffling.

But the SUS are rare, and kinda cool in their own right.
But the auto and high miles make it a CP.
That's a $2500 car, maybe.

CP.
AT, high miles, etc. Unless everything else has been replaced and the car is like new, it's a $2500 car.

How about this?

The local selection of Subarus leaves much to be desired, all high miles, AT and over priced. Too bad I'm not in Ohio, that's a nice one.

could you live with a 4 speed auto?

I actually just got a 97 Outback with the 4 speed auto. It's the first auto car I've ever owned (and approximately 23,581 auto I've driven), and I've found it to be not all that bad. I've only put close to 300 miles on it so far, so I may change my mind in time, but it seems well programmed to me. What year is your mom's?

Oh yeah, I misspoke. I realized later (in bed actually, because what other time are you going to remember mistakes than right before you fall asleep) that the SUS was the precious generation, and that it's trans is different. My mom's is an '03, so the 1999-and-earlier car was probably fine.

Yeah, the SUS appears to have been a neat little quirk in the history of Subaru. If I liked sedans, I'd like one.
I've never actually noticed my friend's 04 WRX (yes, auto...) do anything unusual when I've driven or been in it. Also, four of us took his dad's 03 (I think) Outback LL Bean to Vegas, and it seemed totally normal for those 3000 miles... *shrug*

Maybe it's better on flat ground or something. Or maybe it's broken (I would come to this conclusion immediately, but it only has 72k on the clock). But who knows.

Ok, after putting on approximately 1600 miles on this car, I think I know what you noticed. Driving home tonight, I caught it going from non-lockup in 4th, to lockup in 4th when I transitioned from going downhill to uphill. That very much resembles an upshift, and maybe it's what you noticed. I think it only goes into lockup on 4th, and it sort of appears to be a 5th gear if you're paying some attention but not familiar with this characteristic.
I do wish it would lockup a lot more... but, 1997 didn't have the same mpg/emissions goals as more modern cars. Actually, I just wish it was a manual!
